Becoming, 2024

This work is concerned with the relationship between the human animal and other animals. The video is set in the near future and follows (loosely) a journey of an ornithologist who becomes overwhelmed by her research on endangered birds, eventually morphing to a bird person. This is a metaphor for the need for empathy with all life at a time of biodiversity loss.

The video was shown in the Complex, Dublin as part of Gerard’s MA show. It was a collaboration between the artist and Julia Benedict and Shane Galvin with additional input for Susan Gogan and was inspired by conversations with Juanita Browne.
